Pyridinium N-Phenoxide Betaines and their Application for the Characterization of Solvent Polarities, X. – Extension, Correction, and New Definition of the ET Solvent Polarity Scale by Application of a Lipophilic Penta-tert-butyl-substituted Pyridinium N-Phenoxide Betaine Dye The synthesis of the negatively solvatochromic, lipophilic penta-tert-butyl-substituted betaine dye 1d and the linear correlation between ZET(30) values permit a considerable enlargement of the ET(30) solvent polarity scale, the conversion of which into the dimensionless ENT scale is proposed [Equation (5)]. The ENT values for 243 solvents are compiled in Table 3.
