This article describes the Model E 10A-D Vac-All, a combination vacuum sweeper/catch basin cleaner acquired by the Lisle, Illinois street department. The new machine logged 8,000 miles in its first two years. It sweeps pavements at 3 to 8 mph and has a single gutter broom and 4-ft 8-in. intake capacity. A fine water mist sprayed out at the intake hose end keeps particulate levels very low. Finished surfaces are left clean and dry. With the reduction in trips to the landfill, the department's cost to sweep one cu yd of debris from the curbline is now $6.60, which is well below the previous cost of $14.60. Even greater cost savings are evident when it is compared with contractor cleaning of catch basins. Many other applications are discussed, including cleanup after pothole repairs, removal of excess seal coat chips, and serving as a large-capacity water pump at construction excavations. Options chosen for the machine (stainless steel filter screens and filter brackets, diesel power, air conditioning, high-capacity heating, tinted glass, and AM/FM radio) have contributed to the street department's satisfaction, as well as the driver's comfort.
