Moisture determination by microwave drying

ABSTRACT A study was conducted to evaluate the use and accuracy of a household microwave oven for quick moisture determination of sorghum leaves, wheat, soybeans and rough rice. Standards used for comparison were ASAE procedures for forages, wheat, beans (edible); and AOAC procedure for rough rice. Moisture values by a Motomco meter were also compared with the standard used for the grains. The microwave oven gave accurate results for high moisture sorghum leaves, wheat and rough rice, but the accuracy was lower for soybeans.
