This paper describes the Automatic Debiting and Electronic Payment for Transport (ADEPT) project, a form of road pricing which incorporates an intelligent communications transponder and in-vehicle smartcard for automatic non-stop payment. The system, which uses microwaves, has been designed in modular form. Details are given of the equipment involved, its operation and range of applications. The use of the system and method of metering congestion during a trial in Cambridge are described. Other features of the Cambridge demonstration are listed. Other field trials of ADEPT in Goteborg, Thessalonika and Lisbon are briefly outlined. Some of the issues identified by the trials so far are noted. For the covering abstract see IRRD 865401.
