Uniaxial true stress-true strain curve for a ductile metal

Abstract It is well known and has been shown qualitatively and quantitatively that the necking phenomenon in uniaxial tensile ductile metal specimens is caused by the presence of non-uniformities in the initial geometry and initial strength. It is shown in this paper that a uniaxial true stress-true strain curve for an idealized perfect specimen could be constructed from experimental data which is available for uniaxial tensile tests on ductile metal specimens having a known initial non-uniformity.
