A home energy monitoring and control system based on ZigBee technology

ABSTRACTBuildings are responsible for more than 40% of global energy consumption and as much as one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions in both developed and developing countries. The primary objective of this paper is to propose a cost-effective home energy monitoring and control system based on ZigBee technology composed of a gateway, a base station, and sensors. Specifically, a new hardware platform for power sensor nodes is developed to perform both local/remote power parameter measurement and power on/off switching for electric appliances. The experimental results show that this system can monitor energy usage with high accuracy and can be used for monitoring energy consumption, long-term energy conservation planning, and the development of automated energy conservation for residential applications.
