Some unique signal processing applications in power system planning

Three applications of digital signal processing in power system planning are discussed. The use of a vector radix 2-D FFT in a spatial load growth model has reduced computation time for spatial convolutions by an order of magnitude. The character of a power system is used to derive a set of 2-D digital filters that represent the power system's sensitivity to spatial load forecast-design errors. System design filters provide a useful way of analyzing long range power system needs.
