The application of knowledge-based systems to corrosion management

Abstract A rule-based method of representation of an expert system has been used to formalize corrosion management applications. Essential variables were represented by a series of IF-THEN rules. The application of an integrated database and an expert system provides an interrogative and advisory process which would facilitate decision making. The method is illustrated by reference to two corrosion management applications: (1) during the construction of oil, gas and water pipelines and (2) oilfield corrosion troubleshooting. Potential costs and other benefits are elucidated.
