Power control of permanent magnet generator based variable speed wind turbines

When the wind power accounts for a large portion of the grid, it will be required to regulate the active power and reactive power. This paper investigates a MW-level variable speed wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The power control capabilities of two kinds of control schemes conducted respectively on this wind turbine under two conditions, including rapid wind speed change and grids faults, are compared. The simulation study of the wind turbine system is conducted using PSCAD/EMTDC, and the results show the different power control capabilities of the two control schemes.
