On the mechanism of chip formation in oblique cutting of metals

The paper analyzes the relationships for calculating the cutting angle in oblique free cutting of metals, which were proposed earlier by some researchers. It is shown that from the standpoint of chip formation this cutting process is advisable to be treated as orthogonal free cutting with a tool whose rake is a function of the face sharpening angle and cutting edge inclination. The appropriate schematic representation of chip formation permits calculating the forces acting along the cutting edge and normal to it. The paper provides the results of comparison between the calculated and experimental values of the forces, showing a good fit.
