Biological monitoring in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves with special reference to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Abstract A procedural sequence of prediction-monitoring-assessment has been proposed to organise biological monitoring work in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. The procedure optimally uses existing data and models, makes monitoring purposeful, and leads to improved predictions of human impacts on the environment. Examples of the procedure were given for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which has recently been designated by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.
