Torque analysis of permanent magnet coupling using 2D and 3D finite elements methods

The design and analysis of a radial-type permanent-magnet coupling in aerospace drives using the 2D and 3D finite-element (FE) methods is discussed. The analytical results are obtained using Maxwell stress and virtual-work methods. Correlation of the analytical and test results show that the accuracy of 2D FE analysis deteriorates when significant end leakage is present due to a large airgap or small length-to-diameter ratio. The 3D FE analysis takes the end effects into account and eliminates that error. >
