Managing Engineering Knowledge Federations

The knowledge relevant to the design of engineering systems comes from different sources, is owned by different bodies, and is evolving over time. In this paper, we present a framework where the different sources of knowledge form a federation of independent knowledge bases. Design support systems access the knowledge in these complementary sources and integrate it into a coherent set. We motivate the need for the monitoring of knowledge base properties that capture the quality and coherence of the evolving and distributed knowledge. We discuss the technical issues related to the integration of the different sources in light of the properties defined.
