Method and apparatus for correcting color of liquid crystal display

PURPOSE: A method and a device for correcting color of a liquid crystal display device are provided to form an external light sensor including a photo diode array for sensing environmental light sources in areas any other than display areas of a liquid crystal panel, thereby correcting color, brightness and reference white light of an LCD according to the environmental light sources for displaying optimum images. CONSTITUTION: A device for correcting color of a liquid crystal display device includes an external light sensor(72) connected to edges of an LCD panel(70) for sensing the degree of external light. The external light sensor has a photo diode array for sensing the external light, a second PCB for determining the sensed external light, and a tape carrier package connecting the photo diode array to the second PCB for serving as a channel for light sensing signals. As the external light is sensed by the photo diode array from environmental light sources of the LCD panel, the sensed light is radiated to a pn joining part when both ends of pn joining diodes are applied with a voltage, and converted into analogue electric signals. The signals are converted to digital signals by an A/D converter(74) and inputs to an image processing part(76). The image processing part determines the state of the environmental light sources according to the input digital signals. The state of the environmental light sources is compared with a currently output image state for generating a control signal to be supplied to a timing controller(64). The timing controller controls and supplies R,G,B video data input from a video processing part to a data driver(66). The controlled video data is converted into analogue video voltage signals by a gamma voltage from a gamma circuit and supplied to the LCD panel for displaying optimum images according to the environmental light sources.
