Abstract A hierarchical, model-based fault diagnosis system for technical processes is presented. The symptom detecting modules are written in algorithmic form. The decision-making part is realized in a knowledge-based system module. The experimental system is realized with microcomputers in a peat power plant. The lower level algorithmic modules run in a IBM AT -compatible microcomputer under a process control software, GENESIS™. The decisionmaking part is done with OPS-83 language and it runs in a separate microcomputer. Some results are presented.
