ultraMEDIS – Ultra-Wideband Sensing in Medicine

6 The project ultraMEDIS addresses the specific advantages of ultra-wideband (UWB) radio 7 sensors for medical applications: high temporal and spatial resolution, good tissue 8 penetration, low exposition by radio waves, and compatibility with existing diagnostic and 9 therapeutic equipment even for simultaneous applications. The proposed UWB sensors 10 utilize ultra-low power signals. Therefore, they are suitable for human medical applications 11 including mobile and permanent supervision of vital functions. The technique permits non12 invasive sensing with no potential risks, in contrast to catheter or X-ray techniques. A main 13 feature of ultraMEDIS is the highly synergetic technological development of UWB radar to 14 access innovative fields of applications such as UWB-navigated cardiac Magnetic Resonance 15 Imaging (MRI), heart beat monitoring, accurate modeling of electromagnetic wave 16 propagation through heterogeneous, malignant and benign biological tissue for MRI, and 17 the fast and precise identification and localization of breast cancer. 18
