Traffic characteristics and a congestion control scheme for an ATM network

In this paper, the cell loss rate and delay time of a cell multiplexer handling bursty input traffic are analysed, and the relation between these characteristics and burstiness is shown. Then, a buffer design guideline when input traffic characteristics are given is introduced for determining the queue size which satisfies permissible loss rate and delay time. Next, input traffic management and congestion control are discussed. For a congestion control, the marking method, which marks cells exceeding the bandwidth, allocated when the call is established, at a user/network interface, and discards those marked cells only at congested nodes, is evaluated. Simulation results show that the marking method can improve service quality and network throughput by allowing cells exceeding the allocated bandwidth into the network instead of discarding them.
