Control of Machine Tools Using the Fuzzy Control Technique

Summary Based upon fuzzy subsets theory, the fuzzy control model is derived for which the input parameter is feed rate and the output parameter is workpiece surface finish which has to be controlled. The aim is to obtain the desired surface finish by controlling the machining process conditions. In terms of the definitions of fuzzy variables and fuzzy conditional statements the particular fuzzy linguistic algorithms of the controller are presented and the fuzzifying and the de-fuzzifying methods, which are used, are also explained. A series of experiments were carried out and the results show that the fuzzy controller can be applied to uncertain and complex processes such as grinding with accuracy of control to within 5-10% of desired value. The approach used is found to be satisfactory and can be applied for the control of most industrial processes which are uncertain and do not conform to strict mathematical laws.
