Music and the auditory system.

Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the physiology of the auditory system as it relates to music. Development of auditory physiology is based on the use of simple sensory stimuli, based both on conceptual grounds and on the limitations of equipment that generated acoustic stimuli. The anatomy of the auditory pathway is highlighted. The auditory pathway consists of (1) the outer, middle, and inner ears, (2) the auditory nerve, nuclei at each level of the brain stem, and (3) the several fields of the auditory cortex. The human auditory cortex is also focused intensively with magnetoencephalography (MEG), which is explained in the chapter. Functional organization of the auditory pathway is discussed. The processing of acoustic stimulation, particularly in the auditory cortex, is not limited to the passive detection of acoustic features. Rather, the responses of neurons are affected by attention and by learning. Moreover, the effects of these processes are prominent. Therefore, the processing of music in the auditory system may well engage attentive or learning processes, or both.
