Light-emitting diodes (l.e.d.s) as receivers with avalanche gain

We have observed avalanche gain in back-biased Burrus-type double-heterostructure light-emitting diodes operating as photodetectors. This effect may be very beneficial in a duplex transmission system using a single l.e.d. as both source and detector.
