Theoretical and Experimental Study of Wheel Spalling in Heavy Haul Hopper Cars

It is shown that wheel unloading, due to track perturbations or suspension dynamics, of empty cars during braking can give rise to skidding. This skidding causes frictional heating which, in turn, causes wheel surface martensite to form. Subsequent cracking around the martensite phase then initiates the spall.
