COLD AGGLUTININS: STUDIES OF PRIMARY STRUCTURE, SEROLOGIC ACTIVITY AND ANTIGENIC UNIQUENESS *

Human cold agglutinins have provided the stimulus for considerable previous investigation,'-' since in many instances they represent examples of homogeneous monoclonal human yM with apparent antibody activity. In the great majority of examples studied, monoclonal human cold agglutinins have been noted to be of K typets-lo although a few exceptions constituting h type yM cold agglutinins have been recorded." Although the human cold agglutinins are generally regarded as being primarily associated with the yM class, an example of a yA cold agglutinin has also been described.12* l3 The Ii erythrocyte antigenic system has been the subject of considerable recent e ~ a l u a t i o n ; l ~ ~ ~ furthermore, the discovery of a precipitating system has made it more feasible to analyze the relationship of the I antigen complex to precursors in the A, B, H, Lea and Leb blood group The current studies were directed principally at a more precise analysis of antigenic determinants which, in earlier studies, seemed to be specifically related to cold agglutinin activity.20 Advantage was also taken of the availability of two sera containing yA cold agglutinins. l9
