The T‐Cell Receptor for Antigen in T‐Cell Development and Repertoire Selection

It may be premature to write on the T-cell repertoire because we know very little about the antigen specificity of T cell expressing y,6 heterodimers and because the search for the elusive T suppressor cell is continuing. Consequently, neither of these T-cell subsets will be discussed in this review. Our infonnation on the a,fi expressing T cells is more detailed and we would like to understand how these cells develop from uncommitted stem cells and during that process learn to distinguish self from non-self. The following will be a summary of our knowledge of molecules mediating the specificity of CD4* and CDS' lymphocytes (collectively referred to as single positive lymphocytes) as well as our more incomplete knowledge of T-Iymphocyte development and selection by antigen.
