Evaluation and enhancement of available transfer capability in the presence of static synchronous series compensator

Competition among the power industries is increasing day by day due to introduction of open transmission access for the consumers. The calculation of transfer capability has become a new measure for secure, reliable and economic operation of the power system network. In this paper, available transfer capability (ATC) evaluation procedure for bi-lateral transactions using sensitivity approach is presented. Further, the ATC value is enhanced using optimal power flow (OPF) and using flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) controllers. A current based model for static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) is presented with respective optimal location identification methodology using ZIP Load. The OPF problem with ATC and total power losses (TPL) as objectives is solved in the presence of SSSC while satisfying system equality, in-equality constraints and device limits using Firefly algorithm. The presented methodology is carried out on standard IEEE-30 bus test system with supporting numerical and as well as graphical results.
