Supporting Analyses for the Economic Assessment of Diecasting in Product Design

Early selection of materials and manufacturing processes in product design should be based on relative economic as well as performance considerations. This requires a knowledge of tool and processing costs at the earliest concept design stages and prior to both detail drafting and process planning. The paper describes some considerations of the early costing problem for pressure diecasting. An economic model of the diecasting process is established which is shown to form the basis for such considerations as the optimum number of cavities, appropriate machine sizes, and costing and trimming costs.
