Mathematical model for the viscoelastic properties of dura mater

Introduction It is becoming increasingly important to develop accurate mathematical models of human tissue for use in finite element analysis and in the development of replacement materials. For modelling the impingement of bone fragments on the spinal cord during fracture, the properties of the dura mater are required but only limited data is available. Failure stresses under tensile loading have been studied (1) and an elastic modulus at low strain determined (2) but no authors appear to have investigated the viscoelastic behaviour. The aim of this study was to investigate the time-dependent characteristics of dura in both the longitudinal and circumferential directions and to fit the data obtained to a mathematical model.
