Chess and Gifted Children

• As a game it can be taught to young children by simple introductory games of the kind described in Mr Nottingham's excellent book. Thus, for example, one can put simply the opposing pawns on the board and see who wins. Another game would be to pit the queen against all eight opposing pawns. The white knight can be set the puzzle of taking all the black pawns in 18 successive moves. These are but three of many introductory games which help to establish the moves or the various pieces and some of the basic tactics needed in the game itself.
