Ion-molecule reactions of methyl and ethyl iodides.

The instrument used was a CEC Model 21-103A mass spectrometer, modified so that both ionizing and repeller voltages could be measured with a potentiometer. Further modification enabled ionizing voltages to be set to a minimum of 5.4 volts and magnetic scanning to be carried out over several mass units. Appearance potentials were determined by vanishing current methods, both the extrapolated difference method of Warren (4) and the initial logarithmic method of Lossing (5) being employed. In some instances where secondary ion intensities at maximum pressure were very low, appearance potentials were estimated by linear
