A simulator for training airway management in advanced trauma life support

Abstract In this paper we present a simulator for training of airway management in acute trauma situations. The system lets the student train on decision making involved in situations when a patient has a blocked airway and the student can practise surgical cricothyroidotomy (a cut is made through the cricothyroid membrane and a tube is inserted into the trachea). It is also possible for the student to explore the anatomy of the neck. The system uses the Reachin Core Technology, a display for co-location of the visual and touch senses and an API that provides the functionality needed for high quality rendering of the graphics and of the forces used to give the user a realistic visual and tactile impression.
