Optimization of sensor deployment for localization accuracy improvement

Wireless localization with received signal strength (RSS) measurements catches a lot of attention for its simplicity and low cost. How to improve location estimation precision is a critical issue for localization applications with RSS measurements. In this paper, sensor selection method is involved. First, the optimal number of anchors to reach good performance is analyzed. Second, a quadratic program problem is solved to obtain a weight vector for anchors by minimizing the location error ellipsoid in order to get the nearly optimal sensor placement, which consequently enhance the estimation precision effectively. Finally, the performance improvement of this proposed method is validated by experiments taken in lab.
