Mathematical smoothing of gamma ray spectra

Abstract Gamma ray spectra observed with NaI(Tl) or Ge(Li) spectrometers often exhibit considerable scatter from channel to channel. Mathematical smoothing is capable of removing most of this scatter, and this paper reports studies of various methods of application of the data convolution technique. One method is shown to work quite well, and benefits of using smoothed spectra in further data analysis are discussed.
