On Field Oriented and Passivity-based Control of Induction Motors: Downward Compatibility

Abstract Our main objective in this paper is to prove the downward compatibility of the theoretically well founded passivity-based control of induction motors with the remarkably succesful field orientation idea. Specifically, we show that under some simplifying assumptions on the motor model the passivity based control exactly reduces to an indirect field oriented scheme. A corollary of this reduction property is the first rigourous global stability proof of indirect field oriented control. Hence, providing a solid theoretical foundation to current practice.
