This volume includes Fermi's first 128 out of about 275 papers, with an excellent biographical introduction by Fermi's first pupil, E. Segre. Segre himself, E. Amaldi, E. Persico and F. Rasetti have been responsible for the editorial work and have provided each paper with a short well informed account of how it happened to be written, also relating it to work and ideas current at the time.
