Cell-based echo canceller for voice communications over ATM networks

The ATM network is expected to integrate all existing networks, as a mean of including voice communication networks. A considerable number of studies have been made on ATM technology and moves occur to transmit voice and telephony over ATM. In ATM networks, echo control must be considered guaranteeing the quality of voice communications. This paper investigates the introduction of echo cancellers in networks. We show the necessity of a cell-based echo canceller (CBEC) that can be installed in an ATM network and propose its processing and structure. Implementing a CBEC is considered for the effect of cell delay variation and cell loss, and the processing when operation and maintenance cells are received. The CBEC can guarantee voice communication quality.
