A History of Chemical Abstracts Service, 1907-1998

Abstract This paper is a history of Chemical Abstracts Service from its beginnings back in 1907 when the chemical abstracts were handwritten by volunteers. Computerization by CAS in the 1960s eventually led to the electronic production of the Chemical Abstracts volumes. Computerization also led to a unique system for the electronic storage and retrieval of graphical chemical structures and to the CAS Registry System which identified every unique chemical mentioned in Chemical Abstracts. Online searching of the CA (bibliographic) and Registry (chemical dictionary) files is discussed, as well as the new products for the retrieval of CAS information such as CA on CD ROM, STN Express, STN Easy, and SciFinder.
