Equalization for Volume Holographic Data Storage Systems

Equalization and detection are an integral part of any data storage system, and can potentially lead to significant improvements in storage density. Data detection refers to the method of converting retrieved analog values from the output detector array (referred to as a charge-coupled detector or CCD array in this chapter) to bits (i.e. is and Os). The performance of any data detection method is affected by impairments such as noise and pixel spreading. A major goal of equalization is to process the CCD outputs in order to mitigate the effect of such impairments, and thereby produce improved bit error rates (BER).
