Measurement in Ophthalmology

The ideal tonometer has yet to be designed. From the engineering point of view the problem is one of measuring small forces accurately without deforming the eye. From the clinical point of view the instrument must be nontraumatic, sufficiently simple to use for the test to be done by non-medical staff and easy to sterilize. The Goldmann tonometer is probably the nearest approach so far to a practical solution of the problem.
