Big Data Governance

The aim of this chapter is to help readers gain an overview of the topic of ‘Big Data Governance ’ to find easily the information it offers. Over the past few years, many organizations have begun their adventure with big data. While many are only experimenting with new technologies and innovations to improve their competitive advantage, few are truly thinking ahead for long-term success and even fewer will truly succeed in gaining such competitive advantage. The reason is simple: you cannot compete on analytics alone. After all, what do analytics analyze? Information needs to be trusted in order to be acted upon, but how that could be accomplished? That is the traditional role of data and information governance, which also the case of big data has to create trusted high quality information to make big data analytics more effective, which brings us to the subject of this chapter. Thus, this chapter reviews the common definitions of big data governance and its core components. Then the chapter focuses on common big data maturation models. The next section is the organizational benefits and challenges of governing big data, followed by three case studies to establishing a business case for big data governance.
