COLONIC CARCINOMA AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS. MULTIFOCAL CARCINOMA OCCURRING AFTER LONG REMISSION OF COLITIS.

A relationship between chronic ulcerative colitis and the subsequent development of carcinoma of the colon has been well established. 1-9 It has been emphasized that onset of ulcerative colitis in childhood, 8-14 duration of activity of the colitis, 8-10,15 and severity of symptoms 10 appear to be predisposing factors to neoplastic change. A relationship between pseudopolyposis and malignant degeneration has not been confirmed. 7,10,15-17 Although it has been stated that ulcerative colitis may be quiescent at the time of recognition of colonic carcinoma, 15,17,18 in our opinion, this point has not received sufficient emphasis. Accordingly, we are reporting a case in which, after more than 16 years of total remission of ulcerative colitis, con- firmed both clinically and proctoscopically, carcinoma of the colon was detected on routine examination. Report of a Case A 23-year-old man was initially examined at the Cleveland Clinic on July 3, 1933, because of diarrhea consisting
