Acupuncture: A Synopsis and Highlights of Recent Evidence of Efficacy in the Literature

Originating in China over 2000 years ago, acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular in North America. Although acupuncture is commonly used to relieve pain, scientific evidence for its efficacy has been mixed and incomplete. Acupuncture has been demonstrated to be effective in providing relief of low back pain, in comparison to usual care; and in improving pain, fatigue and anxiety associated with fibromyalgia, in comparison to sham acupuncture. However, the efficacy of acupuncture in the prophylaxis of migraine does not differ from that of sham acupuncture or standard therapy. As more evidence on the efficacy of acupuncture becomes available, it will influence treatment options for both patients and physicians.
