Sounding, Channel Characterisation and Cellular Handset Positioning in a Large Indoor Environment at 2 GHz

The problem of the localization of a mobile phone in a large indoor environment will be investigated in this paper. We will study the applicability of super resolution direction finding (SRDF) techniques to estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of the line of sight (LOS) and then using triangulation technique to determine the exact location of the mobile handset. The SRDF methods are chosen because the positioning is to be accomplished independent of the service provider and mobile user. This prevents the use of other techniques such as Time of Arrival (TOA) or Global Positioning Satellite (GPS). Analysis of propagation measurements made in such environment will be provided to support our study. (6 pages)
