In the engines of automobiles, knowledge on the thermo-elasticity a priori is very informative in the design stage. Especially, increasing demands on engine performance and fuel economy have resulted in progressively higher loadings on internal components of combustion engines and lighter weight of engines. Therefore the structural integrity should be requested in the engine design and many cover type components have shown very high and localized hot spot at the bolt boss flange in many of the engine analyses. In this study, an efficient and reliable analysis technique for minimizing stress of front cover flange by using computer modeling and numerical method was described. Some design parameters were selected based on simplified cylinder head, cylinder block and front cover model, and investigation of how those parameters impact on the stress values at the flange was performed. ABAQUS™ was utilized for the structural analysis and Morpher™ was used to modify the base model based on DOE tables. Isight™ was used for the optimum combination of the parameters with controlling whole modeling and analysis works.
