Représenatations sociales de l’espace et histoire urbaine : les quatiers d’une grande ville française, Lyon au XIXe siècle

Behind the city of stone lies the social representation of the city, carved in the mind
rather than on the ground. Urban historians are accustomed to describing the
former and tend to consider it the “real” city. Access to the other city, the “shadow
city”, is in fact difficult, despite the apparent ease of such an effort. The author
attempts to present a small portrait of the moral geography of a large French city,
Lyon, to demonstrate how this hidden dimension is just as “real” as the city of
stone.
