Statistics of electron avalanches and ultimate resolution of proportional counters

Abstract This paper deals with the fundamental limitations set on the ultimate energy resolving power of a proportional counter. An analysis of a few statistical models of electron avalanches in gases subjected to uniform electric fields is performed. A formula for gas amplification variance in non-uniform fields is derived. The relative variance of gas amplification in argon and methane filled cylindrical proportional counters for the case of K = 10 2 –10 5 and pr a = 1–4 torr·cm is calculated to be 0.6 to 0.8. The present work shows that avalanche size distributions in uniform fields are close to those computed by Legler, but that the distributions in the non-uniform fields of cylindrical counters are close to those of Polya-type.
