Effects of substrate thickness on the gain of millimeter and submillimeter wave slot antennas

With a view to optimizing substrate thickness, its effect on the receiving gain of a single slot antenna is studied theoretically and experimentally at the frequencies of 94 GHz and 700 GHz. The receiving properties of antennae formed on a fused quartz substrate agree well with the theoretical values on both the air side and the dielectric side. The receiving gain of the antenna, fabricated on a substrate with thickness an odd integer multiple of one quarter the dielectric wavelength, is higher by about 6 dB than the one whose thickness is an even integer multiple. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
