Spontaneous Repair of the Tympanic Membrane

A total of 24 healthy adult cats were used. The 36 tympanic membranes shown in Table I received various size perforations for chronic studies (complete repair); another four tympanic membranes received 25% perforations and were studied histologically at postoperative intervals of 12, 24, 36 and 72 hours. Two tympanic membranes received 50% perforations and were processed histologically 144 hours later. One tympanic membrane was completely removed and the regenerating membrane processed after 20 days. The other five tympanic membranes were processed as controls for comparative histologic purposes.
