Use of systemic prophylactic antibiotics with anterior nasal packing in England, UK

prior to insertion into the nasal cavity (Fig. 1b). The Foley’s catheter is inserted via the bleeding nostril and the balloon is inflated. Once inflated, the catheter is retracted and the nostril is packed with either BIPP or Vaseline gauze. The adhesive surfaces of Kapi-Gel are applied to each other creating a soft cushion.. This ‘cushion’ is then placed between the umbilical clamp and the nostril of the patient (Fig. 1c). This method allows the Foley’s to be secured without undue pressure over the patient’s alar cartilage. We have successfully used this method in 11 patients.
