The engineering of large-scale systems.

The definition of the concept of what is a system in engineering is analyzed, and characteristics are suggested for consideration as a basis for such a concept. Simulation/symbolic models, structural/empirical models and descriptive/normative models are discussed as useful devices for systems design and analysis.
