Fatal Diphenylhydantoin‐Induced Hepatic Necrosis: Sonographic‐Pathologic Correlation

Diphenlhydantoin (DPH) has been used to treat millions of seizure patients since its introduction in 1937. Although it is a relatively safe medication, serious and even fatal side effects have been Fatal hepatic necrosis is an uncommon reaction to DPH,2,7*8 but the widespread usage of this drug makes early detection of untoward side effects imperative so that drug administration can be stopped. Most patients with hepatic necrosis will present with jaundice. Because sonography is the screening procedure of choice in distinguishing obstructive from hepatocellular jaundice, an awareness and recognition of this unusual complication of DPH therapy is important.
