exercise on p 23, given as 4 — (6 — 2) = 4 — (—4) = 4 + 4 = 8 (sic), is easily corrected when you are confident, but not when you are working alone and have only just met the topic. Fortunately, there are not a great many errors; I found five in a random trial of exercises and solutions. These are attractively produced books which are likely to be of great help to potential Open University students. They would not satisfy a person who wished to learn something of contemporary mathematics in a cultural sense; it is not their intention to do so.
